Worker Cooked In Tuna Oven

SANTA FE SPRINGS  — Authorities say a 62-year-old employee was cooked to death at a Southern California seafood plant for tuna maker Bumble Bee Foods.

The Whittier Daily News reports Jose Melena was found Thursday shortly before 7 a.m. at the plant in Santa Fe Springs.

California Division of Occupational Safety and Health spokeswoman Erika Monterroza says it’s unclear how the man ended up inside a cooking device called a “steamer machine.”

The state department has launched an investigation into the accident.

In a written statement, Bumble Bee Foods spokesman Pat Menke expressed condolences to Melena’s family and says operations at the canning facility will be suspended at the plant until Monday.

Woman makes nephew ride in trunk of Lexus to protect seats

An Edina woman has been charged with child endangerment after she allegedly had her 11-year-old nephew ride in the trunk of her Lexus so he wouldn’t drip water on its leather seats.

According to the criminal complaint, Susan Marie McCarty, 38, was charged after she admitted that she had her nephew get into the trunk because he was damp from going on a water ride at Valleyfair.

On the afternoon of Aug. 23, witnesses in a parking lot at the Shakopee amusement park reported seeing a boy climb into the trunk while two women watched. Witnesses gave police the license number of the car, and after being stopped by officers, McCarty told them the back seat console had been folded down so the boy could get some air.

When he said he was getting hot, she said, air vents were aimed at the hole, which was about the size of a piece of paper. Temperatures that day were in the mid 80s.

McCarty said on Tuesday night that, halfway to her car in the Valleyfair parking lot, she realized that she didn’t have a towel for the boy. She said she would never purposely put her family in danger and was glad no one had been hurt. “I didn’t assess the situation,” McCarty said.

The boy, who had been dropped off at his home in Wayzata before police stopped his aunt, told police that he had gone on a water ride right before they left Valleyfair and that his aunt had wanted him to ride in the trunk because he was wet and that he didn’t want to question her. Despite the console being open and being able to fit his face in the opening, the boy said, he was still hot and would have rather sat in the back seat.

The boy’s 14-year-old sister told police that he had seemed excited about riding in the trunk. She said she and her grandmother had “somewhat of an uneasy feeling” about the boy riding in the trunk, but they, too, didn’t question her aunt.

If convicted, McCarty could face as much as a year in prison and $3,000 in fines.

Man attempts to teach his 5-year-old niece how to drive

HILLSBORO, Oregon – On 07/19/12 at 8:00 PM Hillsboro police were called to a vehicle crash in a driveway on NW Scott St involving a vehicle driven by a 5 year old girl.

Officers’ investigation revealed that the girl’s 29 year old uncle, identified as DERRICK CHARLES HESS, of Beaverton was seated in the passenger seat of his 1988 Honda Accord while attempting to teach his 5 year old niece how to start a car. The niece was in the driver’s seat and had the clutch depressed on the manual transmission car while she started the engine. Her foot slipped off the clutch and the vehicle moved at an idle veering to the right across the driveway of the residence over a grassy area and into the neighbor’s driveway.

The Honda struck a parked blue Dodge minivan in the next door neighbor’s driveway causing minor damage. This collision caused the minivan’s owner, a 64 year old woman standing near the van to fall and break her pelvis.

The woman was taken to Emanuel Hospital via ambulance for treatment of the broken pelvis. No other persons were injured during this incident.

Police arrested Hess for Child Endangerment, Reckless Endangering, Criminal Mischief-2, and Assault-3. He was lodged in the Washington County jail on these charges.

Woman watched NASCAR with deceased man for over a year

Many of us like watching races in the company of other NASCAR fans, but Linda Chase of Jackson, Mich., might have taken that just a bit too far.

For the past 10 years, she lived together with Charles Zigler. And when Zigler passed away, they continued to live and watch NASCAR together for approximately 18 months until authorities found Zigler’s body on Friday.

We’ll let the Jackson Citizen Patriot take it from here:

Zigler, known as Charlie, died naturally, Linda Chase said. “He just fell asleep.” She kept him in his chair after he died, keeping him dressed and cleaned. His body did not stink, she said. She would talk to him and watch NASCAR races on television with him.

Jackson officials believe that Zigler, who would have been 67 or 68, died around Christmas of 2010. That was 18 months ago. When Zigler’s family members went to check on him after not hearing from him for a while, they went to the police, who found Zigler’s body in his chair.

Chase kept Zigler’s body around for more than NASCAR races, however. She’s admitted to cashing his social security checks, saying “I’m probably going to prison.” She’s currently being investigated. When family members, with whom Zigler did not have a close relationship, tried to contact him, Chase would tell them that he was gone. She told the paper that “It’s not that I’m heartless. It’s just that after so many bad things happen to you, I don’t know.

“I didn’t want to be alone. He was the only guy who was ever nice to me.”

So, next time you have friends over for a race, check on them every once in a while. Yeah, they could be just taking a nap because it’s Pocono, but you never know.

Cops Find Naked Suspect at Bottom of Port-a-Potty

A Maine man found himself in deep doo-doo after allegedly going on a tear at a local disc golf course — before he was apprehended by cops.

That’s because they found him in the bottom of a port-a-potty.

When police at Enman Disc Golf in Brunswick in response to complaints that a naked man had been rolling in the mud, overturning trash cans and sitting in the disc goals, the suspect was nowhere to be found, The Times Record reported.

For a while, a backpack full of clothes was all they could trace — until they spotted him in the bottom of the portable toilet, according to the Times Record.

The 29-year-old didn’t respond to cops’ commands, the deputy police chief said, but eventually cops fished him out, sprayed him down and cuffed him.

The man was taken into protective custody and hospitalized.
